Why Your GTA 6 Xbox Preorder Still Shows Full Price After Using Microsoft Rewards

If your GTA 6 Xbox preorder still shows the full price after using Microsoft Rewards, your credit may not be missing. Xbox can only use Rewards after you turn the points into Microsoft account balance, and it still needs a card if that balance does not cover the whole order.

Why Xbox may still need your card

Crying Xbox console, controller, and credit card showing preorder payment trouble.

The reason is simple: Microsoft Rewards points are not used directly at checkout.

You first redeem the points for Xbox or Microsoft credit. That credit goes into your Microsoft account balance. Then Xbox checks that balance when you buy or preorder the game.

For example, the Xbox Store lists the standard GTA 6 preorder at $79.99+ in the US. If you only have $27 in Microsoft account balance, Xbox can use that $27, but it still needs another payment method for the rest of the price.

That is why the preorder may still show your card or the full order price. It does not always mean Xbox ignored your Rewards credit. It may mean your balance is not enough to pay for the full preorder.

Before canceling anything, check your Microsoft account balance and compare it with the full GTA 6 price shown at checkout.

What to check before changing the preorder

Open your Microsoft order history first. Check the GTA 6 order, the payment method, and whether your Microsoft account balance was already used.

Under Microsoft's preorder payment rules, account balance is charged right away for digital preorders. Card payments and backup payment methods may be charged later, up to 10 days before release.

That matters because GTA 6 is listed for November 19, 2026. If part of your preorder still depends on a card, that card may not be charged until much closer to launch.

Use this simple rule:

  • If you want Rewards to cover the preorder cleanly, make sure your Microsoft account balance covers the full GTA 6 price.
  • If your balance is short, keep a valid card attached because Xbox may charge the rest later.
  • If you already preordered, check the order status before canceling or placing a second order.

Do not redeem Rewards points too early

Timing matters here too.

GTA 6 preorders are live, but that does not mean you should redeem Rewards points months early. Microsoft says Xbox gift cards from Rewards are for eligible purchases within 90 days of redemption.

If you are still saving points, keep saving until you are ready to use the credit. After you redeem, check the expiry details in your Microsoft account balance.

Microsoft Rewards can still help with GTA 6. Just treat it like account balance, not a separate GTA 6 discount code: check the balance, cover the full amount if you want the card out of the way, and keep a valid card attached if your balance is short.
